INSTANT Everything?© 2001 Jesse SlokumOver-run by instant burgher kings Right next to overnight dairy queens Sniffing the breeze out in front of bars Passing out under purple skies The sons and daughters of mister and mrs Jones Continue upon their search For the ultimate in plastic thrills Oh, mother, help me through your night, I'll do my part, and keep my heart open to Wonder 'Cause it's still hard for me to understand Why there should be diamond studded rings Across the tracks from dirty hovel scenes As if this world were run by the stars Now, even the one eye - that never cries, As it sits a top a pile of stones Like it really was the one true church Has been gracing elastic bills Oh, father, fill me with light, Won't you let me walk on your sea, and not go under? In a train station in Hoboken A salesman so puffed up with pride talks To me about his brand new invention Here, have some artificial honey ...a bum begs a dime for the pay toilet... then, turns away and mutters, as the salesman says, "It comes in patented paper combs It's great, I make my living off it!" Oh, mother... If you look, you will see jagged, broken Beer bottles lying on the sidewalks A matron talks of giving and then shuns Any who don't have as much money She won't touch any, since so many soil it... Yet, her son sleeps in the gutter, and wears a Fez He's telling tales of gold-loving gnomes And the fickle favors of profit Oh, father... I've never even bought a big Mac That's worse than sleeping through New Year's Eve! Tapped S.O.S. on the draft-board hearing test Did that get me on J. Edgar's list? Still, I'm always hoping that tomorrow Doesn't have to be just another yesterday Yet, if God did die, was it suicide? Well, who could answer that, but Jesus? Oh, mother... It's like riding a greasy pig's back Or, slipping your hand though your shirt sleeve In order to find out who loves you the best Give your handshake instead of your fist Knowing yourself's one thing you can't borrow It let's us know we each got our own dues to pay Yes, it's all in what we do inside That is guaranteed to release us Oh, father... Be-cause now there's even DDT That has been found in eskimo blood And that's enough to turn our stomachs Say, "Is that's what's making my hair curl?" As we swing all around this space time wheel In and out of that endless sleep death My heart tells me too much of a good thing Is like a setting sun that never sinks Now there's even poisons we can't see Like all that radioactive mud Does GE think we're all such dumb clucks That'd make a Tennesse stud sterile No, I don't claim to know what you're thinking But, if you feel yourself sinking, take a deep breath Because I'm just standing here wondering If that big ole glowing eye ever winks? |
